We aim to reclaim the word ‘other’ for those who are marginalised within the arts. At this festival, we bring the community together and set a level of collective care unknown to our city, to witness one another in our otherness. To see and be seen. The name No. 80 comes from a previous tick box in the UK population census. It designated other races/ethnicities that did not make the main list. We are taking up space in a colonially-led city to make a stand against the stigmatisation of those of us who have felt powerless in our society. The title of this talk is the same as the one that Hawking chose for his Lucasian Inaugural Lecture in April 1980. Graham will look at the genesis of his presentation, the splash it made and how views on the subject changed in later decades. With the benefit of these reflections, he will hazard a present-day answer to Hawking’s provocative question.

Dr. Ziegler’s talk will be based on her experiences writing the first monographic life of the Franco-Scottish calligrapher, writer, and artist, Esther Inglis. Her talk will explore finding a topic in early modern studies, then the intricacies of doing research, and the logistics of tracing down primary and secondary materials, writing it up into a book, and seeing it through the press. Along the way Dr. Ziegler will say some things about her varied career background, leveraging her degrees in teaching and in early English and French literature. Questions and discussion will be welcome!

Don’t dwell on the past

Regarding confession, Saint John Cassian warns us not to dwell on past sins. We may be tempted to dwell unnecessarily on past sins even when we have confessed them. To brood over sins once committed and now forgiven is bound to corrupt our minds and hearts with the thought of sin, and therefore restrict our efforts to grow in virtue. We can’t possibly concentrate on growing in virtue if our minds are always filled with vices. We must always place our trust in Our Lord who told us plainly “if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.” (John 20:23)

Instead, the overwhelming majority of writing in digital form – on any platform – is not only written by computers but also for other computers, in the form of manipulating and optimising search results, social media feeds, and the underlying content. Irish writers not only critique the association of greenness with Ireland and the corporatization of sustainability discourses, they also illuminate the acute challenges that the climate crisis poses to political, social, and cultural forms in addition to ecosystems.
